Grameen America (GAI) offers the Grameen Promotoras (GP) program, which promotes healthy living and empowers low-income, underserved communities through a combined focus on health and business and financial education. Using a community health worker (Promotora) model, GAI provides borrowers with essential tools to improve both their well-being and entrepreneurial success. 

GAI borrowers in the locations we serve receive the following services and support:

  • Weekly educational workshops focused on health, well-being, and business development, delivered by our team of community health workers and educators.

  • Access to bilingual, caring, and confidential team of promotoras.

  • Assistance with health and financial system navigation, including referrals to community resources and local organizations.

  • Access to the ADA Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test.

About Grameen Promotoras

The GP program aims to improve the health, well-being, and entrepreneurial success of participants by using a community health worker approach in a non-clinical setting. 

We focus on driving improvements in both health outcomes and business knowledge, increasing health care access, and empowering participants with critical information on health and business topics that are important to them and their families. Recognizing that addressing social determinants of health is essential to creating healthy, thriving communities, our program offers a wide range of services designed to meet the diverse needs of our members. 

Program highlights include:

Access to Basic Health Screenings

  • Diabetes risk assessment

  • Blood pressure

  • Sugar level testing (HbA1c)

Health & financial literacy Conversations

Promotoras deliver short educational workshops during the weekly Grameen America Center Meetings. Presentations cover a variety of topics including:

  • Women’s health

  • Physical activity

  • Mental health

  • Business & Financial Literacy

  • Parenting

  • Nutrition

Health System Navigation and Referrals

Promotoras provide assistance in identifying and utilizing existing community resources. Key referral areas and support include:

  • Primary care physicians

  • Breast cancer screenings

  • Social services

  • Dental services

  • Vision services

  • Women’s health

  • Management of health-related costs and bills
