A Promotora Model

Grameen Promotoras

Grameen America (GAI) offers a health promotion program, Grameen Promotoras (GP), to promote healthy living and empower low-income, underserved communities using a community health worker (Promotora) model.

GAI borrowers in the locations we serve are provided with the following services and support:

  • Weekly health and well-being educational workshops delivered by the Promotoras

  • Access to bilingual, caring, and confidential community health workers

  • Assistance with health system navigation, including referrals to existing community resources and local organizations

  • Access to the ADA Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test

About Grameen Promotoras

The GP program hopes to improve the health and well-being of participants by using a community health worker approach in a non-clinical setting.

We aim to show improvements in health, increased health care access and system use, and increased knowledge surrounding health-related topics critical to the participants themselves and their families. Recognizing that targeting social determinants of health is key to creating healthy communities, our program involves a wide spectrum of services designed to address a variety of our members’ needs.
